Lecture 10: political regimes in the present (thursday, february 07, 2019: examine critically the 3 world classi cation regimes, consider heywood"s take on the emerging regime types, de ne and discuss authoritarianism as a regime type. First world: democratic, capitalism is the most developed and advanced in the west, developed, industrialized. Second world: one party dictatorship, command economy-control economic outcome, state-led industrialization (second best, first vs second= strategic rivals, first and second compete against each other which, indirectly led to war in uence their regime on the other world. Third world: subordinated to cold war logic, generally traditional dictatorships, varied and shifting economic systems, underdeveloped; poverty, sometimes lack basic needs. Economic: development in the third world, newly industrializing countries: brazil, russia, india, china, is the west still the best. Political: third wave of democracy since 1974, third wave as of 1989-1991. Strategic: collapse of ussr end of the second world, partial integration of china, but no new second world.
