Document Summary
Things for which men are praised or blamed. If prince wants to maintain rule, he must learn how not to be virtuous, and to make use of this or not according to need. Because of conditions in world, princes cannot have good qualities. Must not flinch from being blamed for vices which are necessary for security. Some things that appear to be virtues will, if he practices them ruin him, and some of the things that appear to be vices will bring him security and prosperity. Reputation gained for sincere generosity will pass unnoticed resulting in grief. Generous reputation requires being ostentatiously lavish = becoming broke/miser. Latter; to maintain reputation, prince must impose heavy taxes, raise money etc. Be liberal with what does not belong to you, increases one"s standing. Cruelty and compassion (better to be loved or feared?) Fear is caused by a dread of punishment.
