Based on a book by peter benchley (1973) Set on a fictional island called amity during the summer season. Post-watergate film power structures were full of corruption: amity officials knew that tourists were in danger, but decided to cover up this fact and thus everyone was left to be potential shark food. Mechanical shark wasn"t cooperating, needed constant repair. Initially producers wanted to use real sharks trained to work with scenes. Amazing score two-note theme that is still famous today. Cinematography shots above and under water (shark approaching unsuspecting swimmers) What"s going wrong: shark represented the real fears society had post-watergate. Illegitimacy of their government and their actions: jaws had to die represented things that went wrong with democracy and the downfall and need for change.
