Popular sovereignty & the status of women in john locke"s political theory. Locke & hobbes overlapped as they were both alive at the same time for a period of time. Locke"s father had an association with a powerful man of that time. Paternal is like parent & child, but in terms of politics it is monarchy & subject. Paternal power is good in terms of a relationship where one is making the decisions with the best interests. Has to be consent with political power; no person would willingly give up all their political power to another. Political power has to be limited in its scope regardless of what individual/group it is. Hobbes is never mentioned but he is there. State of nature is characterized by freedom & equality. State of liberty is not a state of license (we might be free & we can"t afford everything we want. One natural law that applied to everyone everywhere.
