Intelligent, problem solving that are dedicated to getting what we want in a way that costs the least (lowest effort) All humans are essentially equally capable of killing each other. Everyone is free - implies ppl are unrestrained (do what you want) Continual fear or violence - afraid of ppl taking your things (not spent trying to improve life) Hope = human beings are rational - trying to solve fundamental problems. This is how ppl create the social contract. Hobbes thinks the sovereign should be one (monarchy) Ruler: security of safety for ppl to acquire goods + feel safe. Ppl: give up all their freedom to the ruler. This is problematic b/c authoritarian state - main goal is security for. Hobbes believes that this is immoral and unethical. Risks of civil war, anarchy, war of all = too great of a risk (authoritarian is preferable to anarchy)
