Five defining characteristics: they are registered as tax exempt organizations under the internal revenue code, 501 c3 organizations, there are only two types of organizations that can be awarded tax exempt status: It is a term that is difficult to define but people in the field come up with different classifications or typologies for these organizations. Kent weever: kent weever: first person to come up with useful typology. Felt that one way was to help government get through issues was to create organizations, hire experts from different backgrounds and allow them to apply their expertise to politics of the day.
