Historically, a see a distinction in many different traditions between prostitutes and female entertainers. Ex: ancient athens: porne (buyable women, usually slaves or metics) and the hetaera (hetaera - more upscale independent ) or companion/coursan (free women) Ex: ancient india mythology - apsara (female dancing demi-gods) Sex work is an established profession that appears across cultures regardless of legality. Type of sex work in societies vary greatly; related to context in which they appear. By the 19th century, western states have been invested in the regulation of sex work. Third wave fem - paradox of gendered and sexualized inequalities. Ex: feminization of labour and poverty, the "sticky floor" problem; feminization of precautious work (transient, seasonal, vulnerable workers) Radical - sex work is never a women"s choice; no one would ever choose sex work if they had other options. The reason for influx workers in ww2 is because they were the cheapest source of labour.
