The terms ethnography and participant observation - synonymous. With both, the researcher is immersed in a particular social setting for a long period of time, sometimes even years. Behaviour is observer in an unstructured way, and often, in-depth, unstructured discussions and interviews are held with the people studied. Overt": the people being studied know they are being observed by the researcher. Covert": the people being studied do not know that they are being observed by the researcher. Open" or public setings: e. g public parks, downtown sidewalks. In an open setting may be dif cult to make observations and talk to people. Closed": private or restricted settings: e. g meetings of private clubs, social movement organization centres. There are many different ways to gain access. Get someone in the organization to vouch for you: a sponsor". You will need the approval of gatekeepers". Offer something in return - a copy of the nished study.
