The information-processing apprach to development: rejected the behavioral approach that dominated psychology, analyzes how children manipulate info, monitor it, and create strategies for handling it. In this theory children"s cognitive development results from their ability to overcome processing limitation by increasingly executing basic operations, expanding info-processing capacity, and acquiring new knowledge/strategy. Important biological developments = changes in frontal lobes, level of neurons, blooming & pruning of connections between neurons, & myelination. Mechanisms of change robert siegler played a role in this. Strategy construction creation of new procedures for processing information. Siegler argues children"s info processing is characterized by self-modification (use what they learned in previous circumstances to adapt their response to new situations: metacognition (knowing about knowing) is part of self-modification. Like piaget"s some version of the approach are constructivist. Those who take this approach do not see development as occurring abruptly in stages whereas piagets do.
