Stressed that children actively construct their own cognitive world. Processes of development schemes, assimilation, accommodation, organization & equilibration. Schemes as child seeks to understand world the brain creates schemes (actions or mental representations that organize knowledge). Accommodation occurs: organization cognitively organize their experiences, by the grouping of isolated behaviors and thoughts into higher-order system. Equilibration explain how children shift from one stage of thought to the next, shift occurs as children experience cognitive conflict in trying to understand the world. Sensorimotor stage birth 2yrs: construct understanding of world by coordinating sensory experiences (seeing/hearing) with physical, motoric actions. Beginning of stage newborns have little reflexive patterns and by the end they can produce complex patterns & use primitive symbols. Habit is a scheme based on reflex that is completely separated from eliciting stimulus.
