Document Summary
Experience with extinction maintains responding because reinforcement is unpredictable. Partial better than continuous: vr or vi are most resistant to extinction, variable schedules last longer than fixed schedules. Learning is not a mechanical process of stamping-in . Involves the formation of cognitions: the internal processing of information (thoughts, beliefs) Kohler: gestalt psychologist, insight, takes sticks to knock down the bananas. Thoughts happened and as a result, animals learn, they form understanding. Tolman of the environment: cognitive maps. Traditional s-r approach can"t explain very well: eg avoidance technique. 2-factor theory of avoidance: classical conditioning, operant conditioning termination of light acts as a negative reinforce for the jump response. Good, but exactly what is this conditioned fear response: organism learns contingency. Given some event, one outcome is more likely to occur than another. Animal expects shock to occur more often when light is presented. The cs (light) allows us to predict that the ucs will occur.
