Document Summary

Measures of central tendency: = describe a distribution in terms of a single stat that is in some way typical of the sample as a whole, 3 common measures: (1) mean (2) median (3) mode. Mode: most frequency occurring score in a distribution, not representative if it falls far from the center of the distribution. Mean: arithmetic average of a set of scores, most commonly used measure, not representative if there are extreme scores, i. e. , outliers. Measures of variability: = provide info about the spread of scores in a distribution, range: difference between highest and lowest scores in a distribution, simplest, but least informative measure of variability. Normal curve: = symmetrical bell-curve that represents a theoretic distribution of scores in a pop, 50% of the cases fall on each side of the mean, the median and mode have the same value as the mean.
