Document Summary
Issues in development: neural development, visual development. Piaget - most important part of the chapter **** Influences development: nature vs. nurture, nature: maturation, nurture: learning, environmental influence. It cannot be one of the other, it is an interaction: nature determines the range, nurture chooses the alternatives (tallness) Stage-like development: discontinuous development stages, separated rapid growth, qualitative difference, ex. Continuous development: smooth, continual change, quantitative difference. Kinds of development: normative: typically sequence of change, look for consistency, methodology is cross-sectional, compare kids of one age to another age (not the same age) Individual: consistency is not here, it is an illusion, look at individual development (follow across time, check up at age 4, then 6, etc. : methodology is longitudinal, it takes forever to do them and get data. Brain development: at birth, you have 100-200 billion neurons, neurons are produced after second trimester.
