Document Summary
They are mostly in the last rem period (longest and most recent, therefore easy to remember) Vivid, high anxiety dreams, high emotion and arousal level, easy to wake up. Significant stress correlated with increased frequency, ie if you have more stressors in life, it is easier to have nightmares. In adults, correlated with psychopathology (anxiety), it"s fairly uncommon. Surveyed 220 students and measured frequency of nightmares and anxiety levels by self-reports. Self-report says 9/year, but dream journals may be up to 25/year. Unconscious id: repressed wishes strive for expression. Consciousness - ego: attempts to control the id, it wants to sleep, but urges invade consciousness. Manifest laundered version (after cleaned up by ego) Freud would say if you dream a lot about these things, you might be repressing sexual desires. Synthesis: cortex interprets and integrates the neuron stimulation, making them in a dream. Therefore the dream is only a side effect of random firing neurons.
