Goals of health psychology: identify health risk factors, identify healthy attitudes and behaviours, identify causes of stress and better health, identify protective factors. Define the following terms & concepts: exercise, healthy dietary habits, safe sexual practices, regular medical checkups, breast and testicular self examination. Health-enhancing behaviors: serve to maintain or increase health development of illness: smoking, fatty diet, sedentary lifestyle, unprotected sex. Stress: a pattern of cognitive appraisals, physiological responses and behavioural tendencies that occurs in response to perceived imbalance between situational demands and resources needed to cope with them. Frustration: type of stress where some goal is thwarted. Pressure: expectations/demands to react in a certain way. Primary appraisals: benign, neutral/irrelevant or threatening in terms of demands: ex. how difficult interview will be/significance of interview to well. Secondary appraisals: your perceived ability to cope with the situation: resources to deal with situation. Catharsis: psychodynamic concept of releasing built up aggression through aggressive acts which leads to calmness after the fact.
