Psychology 2011A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Slow-Wave Sleep, Delta Wave, Sleep Spindle
Document Summary
Delta waves of high amplitudes: eog detects eye movements, emg measures muscle tension through electrodes placed beneath chin, polysomnography simultaneous recordings of various physiological measures during sleep. Arousal: easiest to wake someone from stage 1, most difficult from stage 4, difficulty from waking someone up in rem variable, nearly impossible to wake young children from slow wave sleep of night"s first sleep (cid:272)(cid:455)(cid:272)le. Individuals can be easily awakened from rem sleep by stimuli significant to them: ex. Dreaming: dreaming originally associated with rem sleep but also seen in nrem sleep, dream recall lower for nrem sleep, rem sleep were longer, had more characters, more undefined characters (like groups of people), contained more emotion. 24 hour cycles generated by internal circadian pacemaker system: endocrine secretions, body temperature regulation, sensory processing, cognitive performance. Explanations for sleep: biologically restorative function, brain seems to be resting presence of delta waves relates to lowered brain activity.
