Excessive use was common in rome where writers provided accounts of the effects of chronic heavy consumption and suggested a view of alcoholism that is very similar to the modern disease conception of alcoholism. Seneca distinguished between moderate alcohol use and excessive use, the later involving. Ulpian noted the addictive nature of alcohol and suggested that a disease process may be involved, and advocated that chronic users be treated as if physically ill.
