Being diferent: those with abiliies that disinguish them from the general public. Behaving diferent = deviance: behaviours straying from societal norms or standards. Culture shared paterns difer form another culture. Behaving dysfuncionally: interfere with normal daily rouines, may cause signiicant distress. An understanding of how abnormal behaviour varies in severity over ime. Age: chronological age vs. developmental maturity, the rate of psychological disorders decreases as boys enter teen years, but increases as girls enter adolescence. Socioeconomic status: children from all ses groups develop disorders at the same rate. Biological changes: hormonal changes associated with puberty. Classical greek and roman views: hippocrates, father of medicine, irst to idenify disorders such as hallucinaions, delusions, mania (schizophrenia) and mood disorders, four humours. Middle ages through the renaissance: abnormal behaviour = work of the devil, witchcraf, mass hysteria, johann weyer and paracelsus. Nineteenth century moral treatment: the removal of paients from warehouse asylums into specialized faciliies.
