Psychology 2030 abnormal psychology; chapter 1 historical and modern perspectives. The traditional definition of abnormal is a deviation from the statistical average, however, this is not useful in abnormal psychology since that would suggest any deviation needs intervention. Being different consists of possessing abilities that distinguish you from the public. Deviant behaviour deviant behaviour is behaviour that strays from social and cultural norms. Deviant behaviour alone is not sufficient to distinguish abnormal behaviour because cultural and social norms are always changing. However, in second grade, timmy"s teacher insisted he needed to learn how to calm down, and always sent him to the principal"s office. This is not a good fit for timmy. The expectations and standards of family, friends, neighborhood, and culture can influence people"s behaviour. Other times the standards of one culture can conflict with the standards of another culture e. g. mariam came to vancouver from philippines.
