Symptoms of hysteria were unusual, such as suddenly becoming blind or paralyzed. There was no physical bases for these symptoms. Medical doctor with specialty in neurology inconsistent on these experiences. Freud wanted to know why his patients would report these experiences but then realized that his patients were reporting fantasies that they wished would happen instead of actual instances. The talking cure: while working with the patients, freud discovered that while his patients were encouraged to talk about these childhood experiences, the hysteria symptoms vanished. The conscious mind contains everything we are aware of at a given moment. The (motivated) unconscious mind: wishes, desires, impulses that are beyond our conscious awareness.
