Epidemiologists look at general patterns of health and, in particular, possible associations between exposure and disease: epidemiologists can often explain why a disease occurs and perhaps inform interventions that reduce its impact. Change happens slowly, as in rates of dementia: sometimes, however, a pattern can change rapidly. Before cures can be found, the nature of the disease itself must be determined. The detective work on this falls primarily to epidemiologists. Index case: the first identified instance of a medical problem. In the sars outbreak, the 78-year-old woman who arrived from hong kong was the index case.
