Intellectual and developmental disorder: significant limitations in intellectual functioning + adaptive behaviour, originating before the age of 18. Important to understand that an individual can have a low iq, but not be diagnosed with an idd if they possess adaptive skills. Idd is a delay in development (slower than a typical child). Most children with idd are not identified until they"re in school (late! Prevalence of idd is decreasing why: 1) better and more differential diagnosis, 2) diagnosis has switched more towards autism, ld, or emotional disturbances. Limitations in 3 general indicators of adaptive skills required for a diagnosis of idd: 1) conceptual language + self-direction, 2) social interpersonal relations, 3) practical money, travel, personal care, etc. name): 4 levels of idd classification (for exam, know iq # that go with the classification: 1) mild 50-70 iq, 2) moderate 35-50 iq, 3) severe 20-35 iq, 4) profound below 20 iq.
