Exceptional: different from the norm, may or may not reflect a diagnosis. Giftedness: not a diagnostic term, a term that designates an exceptionality but no diagnosis of it. no criteria for it: why we will look at theories and perspectives on giftedness, no cut off points/expectations about it. Iq = normally distributed: most people close to the average, few people at the extremes. giftedness is at the opposite end of the extreme as mental retardation. Proportionately, same number of people who are gifted as we do the number of people who are mentally retarded. not the only thing we look at for mental retardation. but the only thing we look at for giftedness. High intelligence (iqs: easiest way to describe it. Most widely used definition is on the slide (us office of education: us does highlight iq, but other aspects too! In ontario, our ministry of education has a different definition: definition is on the slide.
