Recall memory = reporing details of a previously witnessed event or person. Recogniion memory = determining whether a previously seen item or person is the same as what is currently being viewed. Stages of memory: percepion/atenion stage i see an unfamiliar male. Can use archival data from actual crimes, or can examine witnesses in naturalisic environments. Unknowing paricipant views a criical event through a slide sequence or recording. Paricipant is unaware that they will be quesioned about the event. Paricipant is asked to describe the event and the perpetrator. Witness may be asked to example a lineup. Dependent variables: recall of the event/crime two formats. Open-ended recall witnesses are asked to either write or orally state all they remember about the event without the oicer or experimenter asking quesions; also known as free narraive. Direct quesion recall witnesses are asked a series of speciic quesions about the crime or the perpetrator: recall of the perpetrator.
