Conformity refers to a change in behavior resulting from the real or imagined influence of other people. Change in behavior that makes your behavior more congruent with that of other people. To make our behavior better reflect what other people are doing. Give rat posion food, and they learn to not eat that food, but give the rat the poisonous food with other rats , and they"re like they are eating it so i"ll eat it. Why are we wearing pants? b/c were conforming to our social requirement. Asch paradigm: informational social influence, normative social influence. When we conform due to informational social influence, we do so because we believe that others interpretation of a situation provides important information that we may lack. I thought everyone knew something that i did not based in a need to be right dangerous if others are misinformed can yield private acceptance not just public compliance.
