Chapter 3 social cognition: thinking about people: categorization: the process of recognizing and identifying something (ie recognizing symptoms of a stroke) Most basic process we use to understand and structure our world. We match features of an object with our knowledge about the defining characteristics of various categories: social cognition: the study of how information about people is processed and stored, 2 basic motives that underlie human information processing: 1) to perceive the world accurately more likely to survive if we categorize objects correctly. 2) to view the self positively we want to see ourselves as good worthy people. Ie schema for ipod is that they"re small, play mp3 audio files, hold many songs. Important goal of education system is to expand students knowledge of schemas. Categorization: basic function of schemas is to categorize objects in ways that impose meaning/predictability, when we encounter an object, we must identify/categorize it before we behave effectively towards it effortless/automatic process.
