Sexual Response and Sexual Behaviour
Models of Human Sexual Response
Masters and Johnson Model
Would gather information in the lab about the sexual response differences
between males and females
When an individual encounters “effective sexual stimuli” they begin to build up
sexual arousal
Male response cycle
o Desire is the first stage of sexual response cycle
o Male sexual desire may be more frequent and intense than female sexual
desire.
o Sexual desire varies within men and within women over the life span
o Excitement phase involves build up of vasocongestion (pooling of blood
in the genitals) and myotonia (muscle tension) as well as positive or
negative cognitive and affective appraisal of arousal experience. Myotonia
can occur in the ariolas of the breast tissue.
o Erection
Corpra cavernosa and corpus spongiosum fill with blood (smooth
muscles relax, nitric oxide)
PDE5 inhibitors act on nitric oxide synthesis, affect erectile
response to stimulation (ex. viagara)
Partial elevation of testes
o Plateau phase involves maintenance of high levels of physiological arousal
and additional changes (i.e. testes enlarge, prostate enlarges, glans penis
colour, pre-cum from Cowper’s gland)
o Orgasm and ejaculation are separate but generally follow after one
another.
Spike in pulse, breathing, muscle contractions
First stage, ejaculatory inevitability; vas deferens, prostate, seminal
vesicles contract to force ejaculate into urethral bulb.
Muscular contractions force semen to ejaculate
Subjective feelings of pleasure, release, absorbed focus in
sensation
Absolute and refractory period follow (period where they cannot
ejaculate)
Resolution period will follow where the male returns to
physiological baseline.
o Prolactin off switch and oxytocin bonding (“anti cuddling hormone”)

Female Sexual Response Cycle
o Sexual desire is the first stage of human sexual response cycle
o Desire may be expressed as initiative or receptive, autosexual or partnered
activity.
o Some charges across menstrual cycle.
o Excitement phase involves build up of vasocongestions and myotonia as
well as positive or negative cognitive and affective appraisal of arousal
experience.
Vaginal lubrication (exudation)
Orgasmic platform (swelling of introits- outer third of the vagina,
grips the penis)
Clitoris enlarges
Ballooning in inner part of vagina.
Breasts swell, nipples erect.
Sex flush
o Plateau phase involves maintenance of relatively high levels of
physiological arousal.
o Orgasm MAY follow
Spike in pluse and breathing, muscle spasms at 0.8 seconds
Subjective feelings
Resolution period may follow
Multiple orgasms may follow, single or multiple orgasms more
common with direct clitoral stimulation in intercourse or
masturbation.
Resolution slower without orgasm.

Document Summary

A- person who is sexually aroused, reaches orgasm (potentially more than once), relatively short resolution phase. B- sexually aroused, reaches a state of plateau where they are sexually satisfied, no orgasm, longer resolution phase. C- reaches orgasm very fast, resolution very fast. Orgasm tips for women: doggy style, girl on top, oral sex, vibrator. Brianna davie: found that the higher the blood alcohol content, the longer it takes for males to reach orgasm, depressive effect on arousal, pleasure and orgasm. Alcohol effects on female orgasms: takes longer for female to reach orgasm with a high bac, more pleasurable and arousing orgasm with a higher bac. Alternative models of sexual response: the kaplan model, desire vasocongestion orgasm, focused on desire, and people who had a lack of sexual desire, she said desire could be: Spontaneous or receptive: solitary desire dyadic desire, starts with effective sexual stimulation according to masters &
