Document Summary
Chapter 5 sex hormones, sexual differentiation, and menstruation. Intro: prenatal period: the time from conception to birth, many structural differences between males and females arise before birth in a complex and delicate process called prenatal sexual differentiation. Just above the pituitary: the pituitary, hypothalamus and gonads interact together and influence things like the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, puberty and sexual behaviour. Inhibin: a substance secreted by the testes and ovaries that regulates fsh levels: regulates fsh levels in a negative feedback loop, shows promise as a male contraceptive. Cycles in men: there is research showing that men do tend to have some sort of hormone cycle as well. Sex hormone systems in females: the ovaries produce estrogen and progesterone, estrogen brings many changes of puberty, also responsible for maintaining the mucous membranes of the vagina and stopping growth of bone and muscle.
