Chapter 4: attention: attention is how we take in stimuli and process information, attention is so powerful, we focus on a specific thing that leaves us almost. It is the concentration of mental activity blind to other things. There is a list of colors written in the same color of ink- must read out loud. Stroop effect: people are slower and make more mistakes when the ink. The goal is to selectively attend to the ink color and ignore the writing. There is a tradeoff between kind of performance: if you prioritize. It is difficult for everyone, however certain groups have more difficulty. Older adults, children with add, people with schizophrenia. Emotional stroop task: for people with phobias and the task is to read the ink color of their phobia: it does distract them. An automobile driver looks left down a sidewalk and pulls forward into a driveway.
