Lecture 14: general principles of the senses: all senses require transduction of information from the world into neural systems. Function of sensory systems: detect & process info about the physical world. World > receptors > transduction to brain (converts physical info to neural signals) Sensory organ = organizes capture of physical info. Light energy > eye > photoreceptors > neural signal. Sound energy > ear > hair cells > neural signal. Different type of info in physical world becomes transduce. More than 5 senses: sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste. Sense of knowing where body is in space, sense of balance. Platypus sensitive to electroreception to avoid obstacles. Take physical info & transduce into neural signal. Sensory organ: eye: photoreceptors in back of retina activated when photons of light hit it. Cones & rods at back of membrane light has to pass through tissue & hit receptor. Sensory organ: ear: ear canal to eardrum to cochlea & inner ear.
