Recurrent course; 50% who have 1 episode will have 2nd; 90% who have 2/3 episodes will have more. Onset usually early-mid 20s; but incidence of mdd in adolescence is growing faster. Comorbid w anxiety disorders, (affects 50+% of patients w mdd) Persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia): chronic low mood persisting for at least 2 yrs & Bipolar mood disorder: mania: period of elevated, expansive, or irritable mood lasting at least. 1 week & accompanied by 3 symptoms hypomania = less severe form of mania (only present for 4 days) Both hypomanic/manic & depressive symptoms = mixed state. Lt prevalence in us: bpdi = 0. 8% & bpdii = 0. 5% Bipolar i: history of 1/more manic episodes w or w/out 1/more major depressive episodes. Bipolar ii: history of 1/more hypomanic episodes w 1/more major depressive episodes.
