Document Summary

Helping behaviour is effort exerted on behalf of others in order to provide a benefit to them. Similar to the example described above, in everyday life there are many seeming reasons not to help others because of the possible costs involved. If we interpret a situation as an emergency and it is not, we may risk negative consequences. There are several factors that may influence whom we may help. For example, we are more likely to help people we like, people who are similar to us, and people who we see as deserving of help. All of these factors are relevant to research on the role of religiosity in helping behaviour. Interestingly, however, high religious fundamentalists were especially likely to offer one type of solution to the problems of these groups - personal change. Altruistic personality: some personality factors that may be components of an altruistic personality are empathy, perspective-taking, agreeableness, and extraversion.
