Document Summary

A psychological state that influences goal-directed behaviour. Three types of influences: activates the behaviour (causes it to begin, sustains the behaviour (keeps it going, regulates the behaviour (involves plans and strategies for achieving the goal) Interlude: the problem with rewards to increase motivation. The first demonstration (with kids who likes playing with magic marker pens) Phase 1: assigned to one of three groups: expected a good player award for drawing a picture with pens, unexpectedly received the award after drawing a picture, didn"t receive any award. Group 1 spent half as much time playing with the pens. Expected rewards undermined intrinsic motivation to continue the activity (when the rewards were removed): in the real world, where you don"t get rewarded for studying and get marks (expected award), then you have no intrinsic motivation. You"re doing it for an external reason.
