The social insects: a developmental path to sterility and altruism. Eusocial; cooperative care of the young, sterile castes and overlapping generations. Termite soldier, turtle ant, honeypot ant or army ant soldier = specialized morphologies. Harvester ant has nests hanging down. All ants are eusocial; many bees & wasps are but not all. Some subsocial occasionally sharing a nest like the great golden digger wasp. In some social insects, r is unusually high between some colony members. Relative value of b and c still important for hamilton"s rule. Males developed by unfertilized eggs queen can choose whether or not to lay unfertilized eggs and produce males. Females half genome goes to daughters and also half to males. Males are all genetically identical haploid genome. Coef cient of relatedness to daughter = 1. 0 and 0 to daughter. Cor aren"t reciprocal daughters cor to father = 0. 5. Cor between sisters (bt workers and reproductive females) = 0. 5 + 0. 25 = 0. 75.
