Over 13000 adolescent deaths in us each year. 70% result from - crashes, unintentional injuries. These statistics paint a very negative picture of adolescence. Most common model & popular assumption; adolescence is marked by development of pfc. Adolescence is a period in development - so pfc development cannot be whole story. Bj casey difference in trajectories of cortical & subcortical regions. Differential development of the limbic reward system vs cortical top-down control system. Mismatch bt development in pfc and striatum. Structural evidence: less developmental changes in limbic regions compared to pfc. Functional evidence: adolescents make more false alarms than children or adults. Worse at inhibiting response to these levels. Neural correlate - would be greater response in striatum areas. Presence of the mother: 25 14 yr old adolescents & their mothers. Played driving game 2 conditions one with mom present & one with mom absent. Presence of parent buffers against risky behaviour.
