Generation); species spontaneously appeared in fully developed form from non living matter (even maggots were believed to have came about from rotting meat) In 1809 lamarch came on the scene with an important theory: species don"t spontaneously appear in fully developed form, instead they develop from pre existing species. There is historical continuity in development (later specie replaces earlier species) Problem: characteristics are acquired but they are not passed on to future generations. Ex: mice had tails cut off over many generations and did not ever lead to a species of tailless mice. Darwin went on 5 year voyage around the world. Made detailed observations of many, many species around the world and spent much time analyzing.
