Religious Studies 1022A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: False Consciousness, Great Trek, Group Areas Act
Document Summary
The mental/spiritual process of ceasing to feel resentment or anger against another person for a perceived offence, difference, or mistake. Reconnect, recognize the common humanity of the other and end the cycle of offense. If someone apologizes, the person must forgive them. Roman catholicism- forgiveness mediated by the church, sacrament of reconciliation. Recognizing the offence and its admission before god. Doing whatever needs to be done to rectify the offence- in case of offence against human. Penance: performing atonement for wrongdoing and connection to karma. Forgiveness as means to prevent harmful emotions from impeding mental and spiritual well-being. Release from suffering through mediation and insight into nature of reality. Questioning of the reality of the passions that make forgiveness necessary, as well as the attachment that gives rise to the passions themselves. It is not produced by deliberation and free choice. It produces evil consequences, but no guilt in the ordinary sense. Injustices and dehumanizing trends built into the institutions.
