Gives us a frame for analyzing the social world, a lens. Term- word, concept- reflects an idea and a way of understanding a sociological object. Marx"s definition of class- a group of people of are similarly positioned in the relations of production (athlete who makes a ton of money would be working class) Vabour"s (?) definition of class- a group of people who are similarly positioned in regards to their life chances (athlete who makes a ton of money would be the upper class) Eric olan wright- contradictory class location, class position where you take orders from someone but you issue orders or you have authority over others. Gives us a way of assessing wether or not our particular understanding of the social world is correct, it gives us something testable. It provide us with a way of assessing wether what is going on in the social world is beneficial or detrimental. Seeks to foster relationship between reader and problem.
