The power of culture is that it makes our sensory experiences meaningful. Culture: the shared symbols & their definitions that people create to solve real-life problems. Symbols: can be abstract or concrete that represents something that it isn"t (ie: flags are great symbols) Material culture: things that are material that refer to their culture. Non-material culture: symbols (ie: handicapped symbol), ways of behaving norms, values, etc. Symbols: anything that has a particular meaning to most or all people in a culture. Language: a system of symbols that allows people to communicate with one another. Values: a general idea (ie: be good to other people) Ideal: what we as canadians value (ie: equal treatment of all people, no sexism, racism, etc. ) Real: what actually happens in day to day life, don"t match up with ideal values. Beliefs: specific statements that people hold to be true, very specific way of thinking of the world.
