Primitive - useful when thinking about how traditional societies have typically interacted with their environment. Typically we think of pre-industrial societies in which people live on the land and hunt and gather. When western powers began to colonize regions of africa and latin. America they noticed that there were people who still lived primitively" and seemed untouched by modernization. Noticed that before fishing expeditions in the ocean the islanders would perform elaborate ceremonies, but would not do so before fishing in the lagoon. He learned this was because the islanders knew the lagoon was calm and they would catch a lot, but the ocean was unpredictable. This helped to explain the absence of these rituals in modern societies because nature is tamed through science.
