Noticed that before fishing expeditions in the ocean the islanders would perform elaborate ceremonies, but would not do so before fishing in the lagoon. He learned this was because the islanders knew the lagoon was calm and they would catch a lot, but the ocean was unpredictable. This helped to explain the absence of these rituals in modern societies because nature is tamed through science.
