What is sociology: people watching in an academic way, looking at everything more analytically, the systematic study of society, using the sociological imagination. Why are you a student: societal norms (expected, valuable, life chances, family/friends, personal choice. Sociologists study the interconnections between micro and macro levels: micro level. Broader social force e. g. life changes, norms, social institutions. Origins of sociology: precursors ibn khaldun (1332-1406) Analyze the growth of decline of the ottoman empire: french revolution (1789-1799), enlightenment & industrial revolution. Huge change in the way people lived, gender dynamics, jobs, new government etc. Moved away from using church/religion to explain everything and looked more to science: auguste comte (1798-1857) science can be used to understand social change. Everyone has a role in society and should be involved in government & political decisions: 20th century. Predictability in human nature: 21st century. Post disciplinarily: boundaries between disciplines have blurred (people aren"t just sociologists anymore)
