Document Summary
We need to recognize some of the limitations as well as the potential in the way we live our lives. Many people feel like they are making a change because they share a post or sign a petition on line (clicktivism) This offers us opportunities to connect w/ people around the world. Social is different than it used to be. Human beings react differently in social experiences. Normally you wouldn"t go on an elevator w/ a bunch of people you know and ignore them vs. if you are in an elevator w/ people you don"t know, you"d be on your phone: contagion theory. How human beings behave in a specific situation where crowd behaviour becomes emotional, irrational, and unpredictable. Concerts are a good example of the contagion theory. We can predict potential for something to happen. Blumer says that there is people coming together, emotional excitement, and everything gets filtered and fused throughout.
