Prior to this you could go to jail for having same-sex relations. The basic norm is that you(cid:495)re straight. People will assume that you(cid:495)re straight unless stated otherwise. Homosexuality only became a term after the 1850s. But this doesn(cid:495)t mean that it was accepted. The law still said that they were (cid:498)indecent acts(cid:499) By 1996 most provinces legislated against discrimination. Sodomy and same sex marriage still a crime in some states. An excessive fear or intolerance of homosexuality. Up until 1973 it was still considered a mental illness. Buddhism is the only religion that doesn(cid:495)t consider homosexuality a sin. But if their family is supportive then the risk drops drastically. Often just need a good support system. The past generations strived for manufacturing jobs that they could work at. They struggle to get a (cid:494)traditional(cid:495) job. Lesbians are received better in public than gay males. Many transgendered women turn to prostitution for money. High risk of suicide for trans youth.
