Sociology -> we use similar methods in the sciences, but we are a social science. How people react to a group of individuals: scientific method science an objective, accurate, systematic analysis of empirical data in order to discover recurring relationships and to advance human knowledge, objective not subjective. Looking for patterns in data: empirical something you can touch, based on the five senses. Things that you can experience: data stuff information, not always quantitative. Not always numbers, but facts: recurring relationships things that happen many times. There is stratification in the world. some people have more things than other people. In a theory course, you would say that people have differential power, prestige, and wealth. A broad statement about the world: methods might break theory down into this hypothesis men have more power prestige and wealth gender effects your power. How do we evaluate this hypothesis: methodologies (interviewing as an example) operationalizing the independent variable.
