Have to come to 8 of the tutorials to get full marks (there are 10 total) Written component has to be submitted the week after you do tutorial. Called the glue that holds our society together. Criticism- doesn"t fulfill the functions it used to fulfill: family farms, function of taking care of other fam members, religion, recreation, protection and security didn"t have police force, were responsible for protecting family. Functions of the fam now: not looking after older ppl as much old age homes, not many fams doing religious teaching. Identity, heritage: blood relatives, emotional bond, support, teachers, role models, obligations, responsibilities, providers of housing, food, belonging, trust, love, relax, learn conflict resolution, economic units (cid:498)haven in a heartless world(cid:499) Fictive kin (lady from the down the road is like a grandma) Difficult to study families: limited knowledge on family, self reported questionnaires or interviews.
