Document Summary
There are two schools of thought regarding th nature of the self according to lemert: strong we . The belief that everyone, regardless of where/when they are from share a common, universal human nature . The belief that there are qualities, properties, practices that are shared by all people. What is it about us that makes us similar ex: hardwired to learn how to speak, move. After 1960"s the idea of a universal self is questioned. What is it about us that makes us different. Instead, believes that concrete historical conditions and biographical experiences makes us different, and these difference from our identities. Society today is more open of new groups ex: gays, transgender, disabled etc. Westerners are usually the ones making universal claims. these westerners are usually not informed about the experiences they"ve had that made them make these claims about universal claims. Historial and biographical differences need to be taken into consideration after people make unversal claims.
