1950 lm called caged was one of the rst depictions of women in prisons. Since then, lms have followed a formulaic hollywood portrayal of female prisoners. Recap of basic prison history: early england people held in gaols prior to trial/execution, pre-industrial england as a way of removing undesirables", quaker reforms jails and calls them penitentiaries and later made reformatories. In 1836 an inspector observed that the sentencing of females to penitentiaries was no ideal and a matron was hired. The reformist recognition established that male and female prisoners should not be housed together. The rst entirely separate north american prison was int he state of indiana and became fully operational in 1874. In 1879 the rst prison for women in canada was opened in toronto and was called the provincial andrew mercer ontario reformatory for females. Women incarcerated in these early prisons were generally perceived to be sexual miscreants. Wanted to train them to be a proper wife and mother.
