Social reaction to an individual will produce deviance. What is deviant in one place isn"t always deviant in another place. Labelling has to do with societal reaction to particular behavior & the subsequent reaction of the labelee to the label. Labeling someone or some behavior as deviant is a process involving interpretation, meaning & the attribution of deviance. Charles horton cooley: the looking glass self. How they develop feelings of shame or pride based on these. George herbert mead: our social self is developed through the interaction between the i" and the me". This is based on the notion that we are able to see ourselves as both subject 7 object. When we initiate social action the self operates as a subject ( i") When we take the role of the other the self operates as an object ( me") A community cannot deal with people it cannot define.
