Sociology 2259 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Anomie, Ritualism In The Church Of England, Social Control
Document Summary
The view of society: a smooth-running machine. Deviance: occurs when something in that smooth-running machine breaks down as it must be maintained. Was viewed as a natural product of the social order & symptomatic of a problem that must be corrected. Change the person & not the system. What is good for some is what is assumed to be good for all (the decisions impact all of us) They aren"t always making rules that are good for everyone. The system must be running smoothly; it is like a homeostatic machine. Too much deviance in society will trigger a cooling off by the agents of formal social control: when there is no deviance there is no jobs for police. Society adapts itself & may evolve over time; highly resistant of social change. Functionalists are interested in maintaining the status quo. The way society is, is assumed to be good for all people.
