Lecture 10: guest speaker on diversion and first contact. Ycja there was a decrease from custody because it"s a non custody approach because of diversion. Youth crime has dropped in the last 2 decades. Youth are referred by police pre charge. Youth worker has 3 months to work with theam. That is sent back from referring officer. If the you doesn"t do it then the officer can proceed with the charge. If it"s a sanction it"s the same thing but its from court and but sometimes you have less time to work with them or more time. Need to look at offence, and contributing factors we do not want to set up a youth for failure. Personal service to the person they harmed. If a police refers it and it doesn"t get completed the crown can sometimes re send them back to you. Provides individual and/or group support to youth 12-17.
